The Kapalua Resort offers hikers and walkers alike a network of scenic walking trails, extending from the ocean to the West Maui Mountains above. The trails vary in their intensity and offer something for all fitness levels. Stroll along the oceanside from Kapalua Bay to Honolua Bay (I love the boardwalk across Oneloa Bay). Hike the old Village Course, with stunning panoramic views of the neighboring islands. See rare, native Hawaiian plants along the Maunalei Arboretum Trail. The hike on the Mahana Ridge Trail is challenging, as it takes you from the Maunalei Arboretum back to the heart of the Kapalua Resort.
The Coastal Trail
At the ocean's edge throughout Kapalua Resort, the Coastal Trail runs north from Kapalua Bay Beach, across Hawea Point, to a boardwalk across the sand dunes at Oneloa Bay. Here you can choose to walk up Office Road to Simpson Way to create a loop, or through the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua to popular D.T.Fleming Beach Park. Among my favorite sights on this walk are the sea turtles that are often playing in the surf in front of buildings 26 and 27 of the Bay Villas and the rare Hawaiian Wedge-tail ed Shearwater birds that nest at Hawea Point. When completed, the 3.5 mile trail will reach the historic Honolua Bay. Download the Coastal Trail Overview.
Honolua Ridge and the Maunalei Arboretum Trails
The Maunalei Arboretum is located above a private, gated neighborhood. Hikers may access the trails only by the entrance across from Fleming Beach Park by the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. The Maunalei Arboretum Trails range from Easy to Moderate. The Mahana Ridge Trail provides a more challenging trek.
The Maunalei Arboretum Trails start at Mokupe'a Lookout and extend to the Sugi Pine Grove.
