Built in 1964, the International Colony Club was one of the very early developments on Kaanapali Hillside.  It is one of the few places in a resort community where you can own a free-standing home on Maui with condominiumized grounds, and Airbnb or vacation rent it, without the need for a short-term rental permit.   This makes it ideal for second homeowners looking to offset their operating expenses while not in residence.

The ability to vacation rent at the International Colony Club is a recent change - it is only within the last year or so that this condominium community has been added to Maui County’s Minatoya List of approved properties for short-term occupancy or vacation rentals.  Prior to being added to the Minatoya List, owners who wanted to vacation rent their cottages had to apply for a short-term rental permit with the County and these permits were not transferrable or guaranteed. Today it is much easier for current and new owners to enjoy the option of renting their cottage to vacation guests on a nightly basis when they choose.

International Colony Club consists of 44 individual cottages on just under 10 acres. There are two swimming pools, and tropically landscaped, park-like grounds.  The plantation-style cottages are painted green to blend with their surroundings.  There are a variety of different layouts, though most range from 1 to 3 bedrooms and are 936 sf – 1450 sf.  Central or split air conditioning is now permitted at International Colony Club with approval of the board to ensure the noise is controlled. Some of the recently remodeled cottages have replaced the original jalousie windows to increase energy efficiency. This is a golf cart friendly community with paths designed for golf cart travel.

Located below the Kaanapali Golf Course on the mauka (mountain side) of the highway, this little enclave is just up the hill from Kahekili Beach Park, also known as “Airport Beach,” part of North Kaanapali Beach. This is a popular swimming beach with a relatively sandy bottom where you get into the water, with places to snorkel, dive, and paddleboard.  There is ample public parking here at the beach park, and a picnic pavilion, and charcoal grills.  Meander down the beach boardwalk for a pau hana at Duke's Restaurant, or simply enjoy the beach and take in a beautiful sunset.
